Molecular Sieves are popularly known as desiccants. These Sieves are used as catalyst and also as filters. The most popularly used Molecular Sieves are Activated Charcoal and Silica Gel. The size of these pores is as small as one angstrom which is equivalent to one nano meter. Molecular sieves are very popular liquid and gaseous filters which help in easy adsorption of gases and liquids. These are made up of crystalline alumino silicates having a three dimensional molecular network which helps in trapping the liquid and gaseous molecules. In gas phase processes a molecular sieve size of about 4 to 8 mesh size is usually used where as in liquid phase application a sieve of about 8 to 12 mesh size is usually used.

Petroleum industry is one of the highest consumers of molecular sieves to separate gasoline from the impurities. You would find molecular sieves in all chemical laboratories where it is used as a catalyst to fasten up the chemical process. Even fire fighters make use of this under FDA approval. Molecular sieves are the boon for manufacturing and chemical industries for its adsorption properties also used in water filters. These adsorbers could be used in various different purposes. These moleculars come in different sizes depending on use. You get 3 Angstrom and 4 Angstrom sizes which are quiet popular. These sieves have the property of demineralizing the water which makes it fit to be used for drinking purposes. These Sieves work on calcium ion exchange methodology and is now used in all water filters. Off late, these sieves have found utility in organic synthetic procedures too.

These molecular sieves are often stored at room temperature with a constant relative humidity of about 90 percent. These are prevented to come in direct contact with air, water, acid and base. Other measures required to store these adsorbents include storing in cardboard barrels. These Molecular Sieves have an amazing drying capacity even at 90 degree celcius. Molecular sieves have found many commercial uses and it has replaced long time taking chemical processes to finish in just a few seconds. These microporous sieves are also referred to as synthetic zeolites as well. These zeolites also offer different adsorption capacities based upon their molecular shapes and the affinity towards the substance to be adsorbed.
